Overview

Even the most casual viewer knows that television has undergone a brisk and irreversible change. People aren’t tethered to the big three networks any longer. Cable networks and online streaming sites are wading deeply into the competitive waters of prime time entertainment. Plus, with the streaming networks, viewers can watch whenever they like and as much as they like.

The 2019 award show celebrating the best shows available on the tube is the 72nd annual celebration of the results of Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Anyone with a ticket to the show or passes to the after parties can hardly wait for September 22nd to get here. Then, they can pile into their vehicles and get over to the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles for the NBC broadcast hosted this year by Michael Che and Colin Jost.

To quantify how big a bite of the audience streaming and cable networks have taken from the only three networks that were available for a long time, the nominations tell the tale in the most revealing detail. What’s most impressive about this list is that many of these networks were definitely not household words until just recently. They have invested money into new shows and are looking to build up their own library of films.

Netflix is probably the largest and most well-known. Coincidentally, its 36 nominations are more than NBC, ABC and CBS combined. FX is a relative newcomer compared to HBO or Showtime, but it scored a whopping 24 nominations. Hulu and Amazon received 11 and 6 nods respectively.

The parties before, during and after the show make the whole evening a once-in-a-lifetime event! Don’t get left out. Be there when the winners grab their trophies.
