While we can’t predict what will happen at the 2026 VMAs (uh, nobody can … not even the producers!), we know that it’s going to be awesome. The VMAs are famous for their unforgettable moments. Nominees and Voting for the 2026 VMAs
One thing we like about the VMAs, and we like a lot of things, is that the fans get to vote for their favorite performers. Other award shows have changed their voting methods over the years. And some only rely on industry insiders to make the final cut. On the other hand, MTV knows what matters: your opinion. Whether you’re into strong female songwriters like Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift or prefer the thick urban beats perfected by Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj and BigXthaPlug, your vote will be counted.
How to Vote for the 2026 MTV VMA Awards
If you want your voice to be heard, all you have to do is head over to vote.MTV.com. Music fans aged 13 and up may vote for their favorites up to 10 times per day. Fans can vote for their favorite performers and producers in 19 categories up to 10 times per day. Fan-voted awards include everything from Video of the Year and Artist of the Year to Best K-Pop, Best Country and Best Choreography, because we all love a good backup dancer. Voting for the VMAs closes on Friday, September 25, 2026, at 5:59 p.m. Eastern Time, just two days before the award show.
Who Are the 2026 VMA Nominees?
MTV finally released its full list of VMA nominees on August 18th, roughly a month before the award show. The VMAs are famous for unexpected moments, and to be honest, we weren’t expecting to Madonna to be this year’s most-nominated artist. She leads the pack with 11 nods. The rest of the field has some strong competition. Madonna already has 19 VMA wins under her belt, and she was the first solo female artist to receive the coveted Video Vanguard Award back in 1986. She’s up for Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for her short musical film Confessions II. The film is directed by TORSO who’s supported artists like Charli XCX and Katy Perry. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival back in June 2026. Madonna also earned a Song of the Year nomination for her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter on “Bring Your Love.”
This Year’s Top VMA Nominees
Let’s see who’s else is in contention to win a coveted Moon Person trophy! Here’s a quick look at the top nominees for the 2026 VMAs.
- Swift is up for nine nominations, including Artist of the Year as well as Video of the Year and Best Pop for “The Fate of Ophelia” If she wins just one, she’ll become the all-time VMA winner. Eeek!
- Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter have seven nods each. They’ll be battling it out in high-viz categories like Artist of the Year and Video of the Year.
- Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and outspoken Swedish songstress Zara Larsson are up next with five nominations each. Fan-fave Mars is up for Artist of the Year. While PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson could win Song of the Year or Best Collab for “Stateside.” It’s up to you, music fans!
- Blackpink’s LISA has four nominations, including Best Pop and Best K-Pop for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi.
- Meanwhile, Shakira, Tate McRae, GENER8ION and Yung Lean are tied for three nods each. Sharika has two nods for Best Latin. GENER8ION and Yung Lean could win Video of the Year for “Storm” (hey, anything is possible!), and Tate McRae is a top contender for Best Pop and Best Dance.
- Best Country is a doozey with some of the biggest names in the biz battling it out, including Ella Langley, Lainey Wilson, Kacey Musgraves, Luke Combs and Shaboozey.
- Although there’s no rock category, sadly, Best Alternative promises to be a firestorm as Geese, Noah Kahan, Olivia Rodrigo, Tame Impala, Twenty One Pilots, Sombr and Machine Gun Kelley with Fred Durst battle it out.

VMA History and Amazing Moments
MTV has been broadcasting hits morning, noon and night for more than 40 years, which is longer than many of today’s music fans have been alive. The very first VMAs were hosted by entertainment legends Bette Midler and Dan Aykroyd way back in 1984. Since then, the torch has been passed to an impressive string of A-listers ranging from Marlon Wayans and Eddie Murphy to LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj. The funny thing is, the show just keeps getting better!

And Lil Nas X actually looked like a moon man, or some kinda Mars Optimus robot at Jiffy-Lube in 2024. Were those funnels sticking out of his head?! As one onlooker said, “They like to dress up, but they don’t know how.” However, these celebrities and their sexy dates definitely know how to entertain on stage and on the red carpet. While the outfits are a big part of this star-studded award show, it’s all about the music and the sizzling-hot live performances.
Who’s Performing at the 2026 VMAs?
Friends, we’re excited too, but unfortunately, it’s too soon to predict who will be performing at the 2026 MTV VMA Awards. The first round of performers is typically released in mid-August, but we’re still waiting, and additional special guests and award recipients are announced closer to the event.
