Who Are the 2024 VMA Nominees?

August 08,2024

Meet the Newcomers and Award Show Veterans

MTV announced its full list of VMA nominees on August 6th. We can’t wait to tell you all about it while we wait for the award ceremony, which is scheduled for September 11, 2024, at the UBS Arena in Elkmont, Long Island. The lineup includes veteran award winners like Taylor Swift. Does she ever get tired of winning? Uhhh, NO! Obviously! It also features over 29 first-time nominees, just because MTV likes to keep things FRESH.

Who Has the Most VMA Nominations?

As mentioned earlier, Taylor Swift leads the pack with 10 VMA nominations, due mainly to her collaboration with Post Malone on “Fortnight.” The county rap-hop artist scored eight nods for his partnership with T. Swift and a ninth for his work on Morgan Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” showing that networking really does pay for itself. But enough about Taylor and Post. Who else is vying for an award?

Multi-Time Nominees

Other multi-time nominees include Ariana Grande, Sabrina Carpenter and Eminem, who are up for six awards each. All three are also being considered for Artist of the Year alongside Bad Bunny and SZA. Speaking of SZA, she’s also one of the most nominated artists with five nods. This puts her tied with Megan Thee Stallion, who happens to be this year’s VMA host. Moving slightly down the list, artists with four nominations include Oliva Rodrigo, LISA of Blackpink and cult favorite Teddy Swims.

First-Time VMA Nominees

Now, on to the newcomers. For those who’ve been following underground and independent artists for awhile, many names on the list of first-time VMA nominees may seem familiar. Artists who are vying for their first Moonperson trophy include Shaboozey, Gracie Abrams (daughter of the J.J. Abrams), Chappell Roan, Benson Boone, Jelly Roll and Teddy Swims. Hold up. Really? It’s hard to believe that this is the Roll’s first VMA nomination, which just shows that the business of pop music is hard to break into. Even established stars aren’t guaranteed nominations. Case in point: Beyoncé, who is up for just one nod for “Texas Hold ‘Em” from her country crossover album Cowboy Carter, which just shows how difficult it can be for artists to make a major career transition. It could also be the fact that she was too busy to attend last year’s VMA ceremony. This is just a snapshot of the contenders.
