The 49th Annual CMA Awards will air live at 8 p.m. EST on ABC. Before you tune in to see Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood host the event for the eighth year in a row, make sure you’re caught up on your country music. If there are any nominees you’re not familiar with, you can check out their songs before the show, so you have a dog to root for. Steven Tyler and Kelsea Ballerini announced the nominations for this year’s honors, on Good Morning America.

The nominees for the heavily coveted title of Entertainer of the Year include Garth Brooks, Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church and Miranda Lambert. For Female Vocalist of the Year, the nominees are Kelsea Ballerini, Miranda Lambert, Kacey Musgraves, Carrie Underwood and Lee Ann Womack.

Male Vocalist of the Year is always a competitive field. There surely aren’t any losers among nominees Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Blake Shelton or Chris Stapleton, but it’s anybody’s guess as to who’s going to take the trophy. The Vocal Group of the Year category can be very surprising, especially with such talented groups as Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Rascal Flatts, The Band Perry and Zac Brown Band. Vocal Duo of the Year should be a street fight with so many talented duos in the running. It’ll be hard to choose between Brothers Osbourne, Dan + Shay, Florida Georgia Line, Maddie & Tae and Thompson Square.

The winner of the New Artist of the Year category is sure to have a bright future in store. This year’s nominees include Kelsea Ballerini, Sam Hunt, Maddie & Tae, Thomas Rhett and Chris Stapleton. The Album of the Year is always competitive and unpredictable. How do you choose between Old Boots, New Dirt by Jason Aldean, Pageant Material by Kasey Musgraves, Pain Killer by Little Big Town, The Big Revival by Kenny Chesney or Traveller by Chris Stapleton. I’m glad I don’t have to decide. I’d probably call it a tie between all of them.

The Single of the Year category is packed with the usual suspects, including “American Kids” by Kenny Chesney, “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town, “I Don’t Dance” by Lee Brice, “Take Your Time” by Sam Hunt and “Talladega” by Eric Church. The Song of the Year nominees are “American Kids,” “Girl Crush,” “Like a Cowboy,” “Like a Wrecking Bar, ”and “Take Your Time.” And the all-important Music Video of the Year category is plum loaded to the brim with old and new favorites. The nominees are “Biscuits” by Kacey Musgraves, “Girl Crush” by Little Big Town, “Girl in a County Song” by Maddie & Tae, “Little Red Wagon” by Miranda Lambert and “Something in the Water” by Carrie Underwood.
